Spectroscopy Laboratory
The Spectroscopy Laboratory has a focus on vibrational spectroscopy techniques, The lab hosts Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS), Spectrofluorometer and UV-Vis-NIR Spectrophotometer.
Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS)
With the Shimadzu AA 7000 model device, analysis is possible with a flame, graphite furnace and hydride system. Atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) is an easy, high-throughput, and inexpensive technology used primarily to analyze compounds in solution. As such, AAS is used in food and beverage, water, clinical, and pharmaceutical analysis. It is also used in mining operations, such as to determine the percentage of precious metal in rocks.
The lamps in our laboratory are Iron (Fe), Copper (Cu), Nickel (Ni), Cadmium (Cd), Manganese (Mn), Magnesium (Mg), Calcium (Ca), Mercury (Hg), Zinc (Zn). 9 different metals can be measured in solution.
Spectrofluorometer
The Edinburgh Instruments FS5 model Fluorescence Spectrometer in our laboratory is capable of detecting steady-state fluorescence and phosphorescence radiation and fluorescence lifetime using time-resolved single-photon counting technique.
The device has single photon counting technology. It uses a 150W Xe lamp for steady-state measurements. It has three detectors: emission, reference and transmission. Signal to noise ratio is 6000:1. It has excitation spectral range: 230 nm-100 nm, emission spectral range: 230 nm-870 nm and scanning speed: 100 nm/s. Solid (powder), liquid and film samples can be examined in our device.
UV-Vis-NIR Spectrophotometer
A spectrophotometer measures a material's reflection or transmission by measuring light intensity/absorbency at a specific wavelength. UV-VIS and NIR spectrophotometers measure in those particular spectrums, with wavelength ranges that can span 185–3300 nm.
The Shimadzu brand UV-3600 Plus model 3 detector UV-VIS-NIR device in our laboratory uses PMT (photomultiplier tube) in the ultraviolet and visible regions, and InGaAs and cooled PbS detectors in the near infrared region.
